Recently, Ushindi, a KEF Scholar and founder of New Generation in Action, a nonprofit dedicated to social transformation, added a new title to his resume: Graduate.

We knew Ushindi was special from the moment we received his application. In his personal statement (a requirement for all applicants), he wrote: “Through the benefits I will have from this scholarship, I will be the light of youths and disabled persons. People need to be trained in entrepreneurship for sustainable development. I will organize more training regarding this topic, mainly how to start a business and its management for success.

I believe that once young people and disabled persons are trained in entrepreneurship, poverty will be reduced and, therefore, my community will be economically developed.”

It was a strong statement and provides a glimpse into just how bright and motivated Ushinid is: He sees a path forward for a difficult societal challenge, offering hope and a commitment to creating a brighter future for his community.

Ushindi himself has never lived within the status quo. An orphan and disabled, Ushindi is not someone who was set up for success. Yet, his spirit couldn’t be dulled.

“Even before completing my degree, I felt the responsibility to serve my community in Goma,” he shared after graduating. “The scholarship I received was the catalyst for this journey. It allowed me to focus on my growth, which in turn gave me the strength to empower others.”

Since founding New Generation in Action in 2023, Ushindi has grown it from one employee to twelve. They have trained several young people in business and provided assistance to vulnerable families, orphans, and displaced individuals across Goma. In one year alone, the organization brought together more than 400 young volunteers to speak about the difficulties facing their community and carried out various humanitarian actions across education, human rights, innovation, and environmental protection.

We couldn’t be prouder of Ushindi, his dedication to his own intellectual pursuits, and the progress he’s made in “Paying it Forward.”
