Quiet Resilience, Remarkable Courage: Shivangi’s Success Story

When every day is a fight to survive, education often falls off the priority list; but remarkable courage comes in many forms, and Shivangi never stopped reaching for a brighter future.

Shivangi’s journey is one of quiet resilience and remarkable courage. Her father worked as a daily wage laborer in Delhi to provide for his family. This meant that Shivangi was used to a life in which constrained money meant constrained resources, including education. 

“There were times when I felt my education would have to stop because my family simply could not afford it,” explained Shivangi. 

Nonetheless, this young woman of extraordinary drive had her sights set on a career in journalism. So when a scholarship opportunity opened up via our partnership with the David Swope Memorial Fund and the White Lotus Charitable Trust, Shivangi jumped at the chance.

It was clear that Shivangi was a gifted student with big dreams, and carried within her a strong desire to learn, to express herself, and to tell stories that mattered. All of the necessities of a KEF Scholar: “Receiving the scholarship gave me hope when I was close to giving up.”

With her scholarship in hand, Shivangi was able to enroll in—and complete—her degree in Mass Communication. The scholarship became a lifeline, allowing her to securely stay in college without worrying about finances. 

Because Shivangi focused fully on developing her skills—journalism, media ethics, content creation, and storytelling—her hard work and dedication finally bore fruit. Today, Shivangi is a trainee at Doordarshan News Channel, India’s national broadcaster. For the first time, Shivangi is earning an income of her own and contributing to her household. 

“Walking into the Doordarshan newsroom for the first time felt unreal,” Shivangi shared, “I never imagined that someone from my background could reach here. This opportunity exists because someone believed in me and invested in my education.” 

Shivangi’s story is a powerful example of how access to education can change a life’s direction. Her education gave her dignity and the confidence to dream bigger. Shivangi hopes she can use her new voice to inspire others.
